What is A Compounding Pharmacy?
A compounding pharmacy creates prescription medications from scratch, formulated specifically for each patient. Rather than dispensing a mass-manufactured product made for the average person, a compounding pharmacy like UluRx builds your formula around your body — your hair loss pattern, your scalp condition, your health history, and your treatment goals.
This is fundamentally different from what you’ll find at CVS, Walgreens, or a standard telehealth platform.
What does "custom compounding" actually mean?
Compounding is the practice of creating a prescription medication from scratch — combining individual pharmaceutical-grade ingredients in specific concentrations for a specific patient. It’s a practice that has existed for centuries and is how all prescriptions were made before mass manufacturing.
Today, compounding pharmacies fill a critical gap: they create formulas that can’t be found in a standard commercial product. That might mean a different concentration than what’s commercially available, a combination of actives that don’t exist in a single off-the-shelf product, a base formulation adjusted for a patient’s skin or scalp type — or simply leaving out an ingredient a patient has reacted to or wants to avoid.
For hair loss and anti-aging skincare, this matters enormously. The most effective treatments aren’t one-size-fits-all. The right combination of actives for someone with advanced, long-standing hair loss is different from what’s appropriate for early thinning. A skincare formula for someone dealing with hyperpigmentation and fine lines needs different actives than one targeting rosacea and texture. A patient who has tried Minoxidil and doesn’t want it again shouldn’t be forced to take it. A patient with sensitive skin who can’t tolerate high-strength Tretinoin shouldn’t receive it at full concentration.

Before your provider writes anything, you complete a health intake that captures not just your medical history but your preferences. Have a known sensitivity to an ingredient? Tell us. Tried something before that didn’t work or caused a reaction? Tell us. Specifically don’t want Minoxidil in your hair formula — or high-strength Tretinoin in your skincare — or anything else? Tell us that too.
Your provider reads every intake individually. This is not an automated system that approves a preset formula based on a symptom checklist. A licensed medical professional reads what you’ve written, considers your history and preferences, and writes a prescription that reflects both the clinical picture and your stated wishes.
If there’s an ingredient you want excluded, it won’t be in your formula. If you’ve had a prior reaction to something, your provider screens for it. If you have a preference for a particular active you’ve researched, you can note that — and your provider will consider it.

How the Compounding Process Works
From your intake to your door — the same process for every formula we make
Step 1 — Assessment After placing your order, you complete an online health assessment covering your hair loss history, scalp condition, medications, and treatment goals.
Step 2 — Provider Review A licensed medical provider reviews your assessment and determines the right ingredients and concentrations for your specific situation. If a prescription is appropriate, it’s issued at this stage.
Step 3 — Compounding Your formula is compounded fresh in our licensed U.S. pharmacy — not pulled from inventory. Each batch is prepared to pharmaceutical standards.
Step 4 — Quality Check and Shipping Before your formula ships, it goes through a final quality review. Most orders ship within a few business days of provider approval.
Step 5 — Ongoing Adjustment As your hair responds, your formula can be modified. UluRx’s team is available by phone, text, or live video to review your progress and recommend adjustments — something no standard telehealth platform can offer.
Hair Growth Ingredients
UluRx compounds prescription-grade hair growth serums using clinically studied active ingredients. Your formula may include one or more of the following, based on your provider’s recommendation.
Minoxidil
A topical vasodilator that prompts hair follicles to enter and extend the active growth phase. One of the most studied ingredients in hair loss treatment, available in concentrations customized to your scalp and sensitivity level.
Latanoprost
A prostaglandin analog shown in clinical studies to stimulate hair follicle activity and increase hair density. Not available from standard telehealth platforms — only accessible through a licensed compounding pharmacy.
Finasteride
An oral or topical DHT blocker that addresses the hormonal driver of androgenetic alopecia. Can be included in compounded topical formulas to reduce systemic side effect risk compared to oral dosing.
Ketoconazole
An antifungal with anti-androgenic properties, used as a scalp treatment to reduce inflammation and DHT activity at the follicle level. Available as a standalone serum or incorporated into a multi-ingredient formula.
Caffeine
A topical antioxidant that supports scalp circulation and reduces follicle inflammation. Often used as a supporting ingredient in multi-compound hair growth serums.
Dutasteride
A dual-action DHT blocker that inhibits both Type I and Type II 5-alpha reductase enzymes — making it a stronger option than Finasteride for patients who haven’t responded to standard DHT-blocking protocols. Not FDA-approved for hair loss as a standalone drug, but can be included in a compounded topical formula when a licensed provider determines it’s appropriate.
Azelaic Acid
A topical ingredient with documented anti-androgenic properties that inhibits 5-alpha reductase at the follicle level, reducing local DHT activity without systemic exposure. Used as a supporting ingredient in compounded hair growth serums to address the hormonal driver of follicle miniaturization alongside other actives.
Retinoic Acid
A metabolite of vitamin A that enhances the absorption and efficacy of other topical hair growth ingredients, particularly Minoxidil. Improves penetration of actives through the scalp’s skin barrier and supports cell turnover at the follicle level.
Salicylic Acid
A beta hydroxy acid used in hair growth formulas as a scalp-prep ingredient. Exfoliates the scalp, clears follicular debris and buildup, and reduces inflammation that can contribute to follicle miniaturization — helping active ingredients like Minoxidil and Latanoprost reach the follicle without obstruction.

Tretinoin
A vitamin A derivative and the gold standard in prescription skincare. Reduces fine lines, improves skin tone and texture, accelerates cell turnover, and treats acne. Must be prescribed and compounded at the right concentration for your skin type.
Azelaic Acid
A topical antiseptic that improves rosacea, lightens melasma, reduces post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and clears pores. Well-tolerated and effective for sensitive skin.
Niacinamide
A topical B vitamin that improves hyperpigmentation, reduces skin dryness and irritation, decreases redness, and supports skin barrier function. Frequently combined with Tretinoin to reduce irritation.
Hydroquinone
A prescription-strength depigmenting agent used to lighten melasma, sun spots, freckles, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Requires a licensed provider and is not available over the counter at effective concentrations.
Kojic Acid
A naturally derived brightening agent that reduces sun spots, age spots, and the appearance of scarring. Often used as a complement to or alternative to Hydroquinone.
Hyaluronic Acid
A naturally occurring humectant that increases skin moisture and reduces the visible appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Salicylic Acid
A beta hydroxy acid that exfoliates the skin, keeps pores clear, and reduces acne. Effective for oily and acne-prone skin types.
Metronidazole
A topical antibiotic that reduces inflammation and decreases redness. Commonly used to treat rosacea.
Benzoyl Peroxide
An antibacterial agent that reduces pimples and blackheads and prevents antibiotic resistance in acne treatment regimens.
Fluocinolone
A corticosteroid used to reduce the irritating effects of other active ingredients, particularly Hydroquinone and Tretinoin, in combination formulas.
Clindamycin
An antibiotic that reduces acne-related inflammation when used topically.
Retinoic Acid
A metabolite of vitamin A that improves cell turnover and boosts collagen production. Used in anti-aging and skin renewal formulas.
Phytonadione (Vitamin K)
Supports cell turnover and protects collagen. Often included in formulas targeting under-eye concerns and bruising.

Compounding pharmacies are regulated at the state level by boards of pharmacy, which set standards for facility conditions, pharmacist qualifications, ingredient sourcing, and dispensing practices. Operating without a license is illegal — and unfortunately, some online sellers do exactly that.

What your prescription label tells you — and what to do with it
Your formula arrives with a prescription label affixed to the bottle. It isn’t just a sticker — it’s a legally required document that contains everything you need to use your formula correctly and safely.
Your label includes:
- Your name and date of birth — confirming the formula was made for you specifically
- Your prescriber’s name and contact information — so you can reach them with clinical questions
- The pharmacy name, address, and phone number — so you can contact us with any order issues
- Your exact ingredients and concentrations — every active and its specific strength, in plain language
- Application instructions — how much to apply, where, and how often
- Dispensing date and beyond-use date — when your formula was compounded and when it should be used by
- Refill information — whether refills are authorized and how to request them

Can I request that certain ingredients be left out of my formula?
Absolutely. Your health intake includes space to share preferences, sensitivities, prior experiences, and anything you’d like to avoid. Many clients specifically request no Minoxidil, or flag a sensitivity to Tretinoin or another active they’ve reacted to. Your provider reads every intake individually — not a system, not an algorithm — and your formula reflects what you share. What if I've tried certain ingredients before and they didn't work?
Tell us in your intake. Your provider will take your treatment history into account. If you’ve used Minoxidil for a year without results, your provider may prioritize other actives or adjust concentrations. If you’ve used a Tretinoin product before and found it too irritating, your provider can start at a lower concentration or pair it with a barrier-supporting active. Your history is clinical information — it directly affects your prescription.
Do I need to see a doctor before ordering?
No. The provider consultation is built into your UluRx order at no extra charge. After checkout, you complete a health intake, and a licensed medical provider reviews it and issues your prescription — all without an in-office visit. If your provider needs to speak with you before prescribing, they’ll reach out directly.
Is my prescription included in the price?
Yes. The cost of provider review and your prescription is included in the product price. There are no separate consultation fees.
Can I use my health insurance?
Compounded medications are generally not covered by insurance because they are custom-made and not FDA-approved products. Your UluRx order is paid out of pocket. Some HSA and FSA accounts may cover prescription compounded medications — check with your plan administrator.
What if my provider decides the formula isn't right for me?
In rare cases, a provider may determine that a particular formula or ingredient isn’t appropriate for your health history. If that happens, they will contact you to discuss alternatives. If they are unable to prescribe, you will not be charged for the provider review.
How is a compounded hair formula different from buying Minoxidil over the counter?
Over-the-counter Minoxidil is a single ingredient at a fixed concentration in a standardized base. A compounded UluRx hair formula can include Minoxidil at a custom concentration alongside prescription actives unavailable over the counter — such as Latanoprost, Finasteride, or Spironolactone — or it can be built entirely without Minoxidil if that’s your preference. The base is formulated for your specific scalp type. It’s the difference between a generic solution and one built around your specific pattern of loss.
How is a compounded skincare formula different from what I can buy at a store or med spa?
Most retail and even professional skincare products are formulated to be safe for the broadest possible population — which means the active concentrations are often conservative. Compounded prescription skincare can use higher concentrations of actives like Tretinoin, Hydroquinone, or Azelaic Acid that aren’t available over the counter, combine multiple prescription actives in a single formula, and adjust the base for your skin type. Your provider also ensures the combination is appropriate for your specific skin concerns and health history.
Is this the same as what you'd get from a dermatologist?
In many cases, yes. Compounded topical formulas are regularly prescribed by dermatologists and other providers in clinical settings for both hair loss and skincare.
