Menopause hair loss is thinning or extra shedding that starts in perimenopause and often speeds up after your last period. Hormones play a part, but they’re rarely the whole story. Most women over 45 are dealing with several causes at once, which is why one fix rarely works.
What causes hair loss during menopause?
Androgens and DHT. As estrogen drops, androgens have a bigger effect on the scalp. DHT shrinks hair follicles over time, which shows up as a widening part and thinner hair on top. This androgenic pattern is the most common cause of hair loss, and it matters more the older you get.
Nutrition and absorption. After menopause, your body doesn’t absorb nutrients as well as it used to. Even if you eat well, less may be reaching your hair.
Scalp health. Flaking, itch, buildup and inflammation all add to shedding. Many women don’t realize their scalp is part of the problem until they treat it.
Sleep and stress. Poor sleep and ongoing stress add to the “perfect storm” that pushes more hairs into shedding.
Why your labs can come back normal
A common story is: “I’m losing hair, but my doctor says my labs are normal.” Normal labs don’t mean nothing is wrong. Hormones are one variable. Nutrition, scalp health and sleep are the others, and standard labs don’t measure most of them.
What helps with menopause hair loss?
What works depends on your age, how much thinning you have and how long it’s been happening.
- In your 40s or with early thinning: minoxidil is often enough to start. Ulu Ultimate Regrow is a prescription minoxidil and tretinoin serum for women 45 and over with early thinning. Minoxidil extends the follicle’s growth phase, and tretinoin helps it absorb.
- In your mid-50s and beyond, or when minoxidil stopped working: DHT becomes a bigger factor, and a stronger plan usually makes more sense. Hair Bomb .05 starts with a latanoprost 0.05% base for moderate to significant thinning. Hair Bomb .10 is our strongest latanoprost serum, for advanced thinning. With either one, you can choose up to 3 optional add-ins and leave out anything you don’t want.
- If your scalp flakes, itches or sheds: Ketoconazole 2% Scalp Serum is a prescription leave-on serum for flaking, itch and scalp-related shedding. It pairs with any UluRx hair serum.
- For nutrition: Ulu Ultimate Daily Supplement is a complete multivitamin with hair, hormone-support and antioxidant blends: 40+ ingredients, with every vitamin and mineral dose on the label. It’s built for women 45 and over.
How long does it take to see results?
Early changes with a prescription hair serum typically show after about 3 months of consistent use. Hair grows in cycles, so give any plan at least that long before judging it.

Frequently asked questions
Is menopause hair loss permanent?
Not necessarily. A serum can only help where a hair follicle is still alive. If you still see fine or thin hairs in an area, the follicles there are alive, and that’s where treatment can help.
Does hormone therapy fix menopause hair loss?
Hormones are only one variable. Many women on hormone therapy still lose hair because DHT, nutrition and scalp health aren’t addressed.
Can I use a hair serum and a scalp serum together?
Yes. Ketoconazole 2% Scalp Serum pairs with any UluRx hair serum.
